Election Day Eve 2024

As I stood on a tiny oasis of time
between all of my yesterdays
and everything that comes next,

I put away my phone
shut down my laptop
turned off the TV
and closed my eyes
to search my heart
for a peaceful place,

and the most surprising prayer came to me.

We the People,
who are humanly incapable of perfection within ourselves,
ask You for Your help

to accept the responsibility of our citizenship
which calls us to be united
in doing one, single thing:

strive to perfect our union with each other

work for perfect justice for all
work for perfect tranquility for all
work for perfect shelter from storms for all

it is the pursuit of the well-being for all today
that creates the possibility of prosperity for all tomorrow
and brings us closer to God for all eternity

this is the blessing of liberty
that we ordain as our promise to each other
and it is the only light that faces forward.

Lord, hear our prayer.
